Geshe Ngawang Samten

geshe-samten-2010Geshe-la was born at Panchamari, MP, India. At the age of nine, he entered the Sera Monastic Institute and took the vows of monk ordination with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Geshe-la completed his studies and attained his Geshe degree at the highest level of a Lharampa, the equivalent of a PhD in Buddhist Philosophy. He taught as a lecturer in the Gelug tradition at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath. Since 2003, Geshe-la has been the main resident teacher at VI.


Vikas Kumar (Local Guide)

photo-vikasVikas Kumar is a local guide, born and raised in a small picturesque village of Naddi, 10 kilometres north of Dharamsala. Passionate and knowledge about the history and culture of the region, Vikas has worked as a trekking guide for the last 12 years. He has introduced thousands of foreigners to the wonders of the Himalays and now leads groups throughout India and Nepal.

Arrive Bangalore.  Pick up from International Airport and transfer to hotel.  Overnight Bangalore
Day 2

16 January 2018

Leave after breakfast for the  5 hour drive to  Byalkuppe the home of Sera Jay Monastery. A town of 5000 Tibetan Buddhist monks and the largest Monastery outside of Tibet.  Arrive early afternoon. Rest of the afternoon at leisure.  Overnight Sera Jey’s Guest House
Day 3-4

17-18 January 2018

Spend the day in around Sera Jay Monastery. Tour the different colleges at the monastery, the main court where thousands of monks hold daily debates, a visit to the mass kitchen and meet with prominent teachers from the monastery.

Visit the Namdroling Nyingmapa Tibetan Monastery and Golden Temple, located near Kushalnagar,.  The monastery is home to hundreds of monks, with the Tibetan settlement being the second largest in India. Overnight Sera Jey Guest House.

Early morning drive to Bangalore (approx 5 hours). Late afternoon flight to Hyderabad.  Overnight  Hyderabad

20 January 2018

Morning sightseeing around Hyderabad. Visit the Anandha Vihara the Majestic modern Temple dedicated to Lord Buddha and opened by Dalai Lama and the Grand Monolith Statue of Lord Buddha at Buddha Purnima.  Afternoon drive to Nagarjuna Sagar (approx 4 hours). Overnight Nagarjuna Sagar
Day 7

21 January 2018

Sightseeing of Anupu ruins, the Amphi-Theatre, Viharas and  Chaityas and the other Buddhist remains.  Afternoon boat excursion to visit the serene Nagarjuna Konda Island Museum. One of the outstanding Buddhist civilization dating back to the 3rd century AD were excavated here and are carefully preserved on a picturesque island called Nagarjuna Konda, situated in the centre of a man-made lake. Day 8

22 January 2018

After breakfast drive to Amaravathi museum and first sight of Kalachakra (approx 4 hours). Later we will be visit the beautiful Undavalli Caves which is a 4 story cave temple carved out of the hillside for Buddhist monks in the 2nd century. Late afternoon drive to Vijayawada. Overnight Vijayawada.
Day 9

23 January 2018

After breakfast, visit Neelamkondapalli and Jagayapeta stupas filled with inscriptions from the Mauryan era. Late afternoon drive back to Hyderabad.  Overnight Hyderabad.

24 January 2018

Early afternoon flight to Aurangabad – leaving at 12:15 and arriving in Aurangabad at 17:30.  Transfer to your hotel.  Overnight Aurangabad

25 January 2018

Leave after an early breakfast for your visit to Ajanta caves (115 kms).  On arrival catch the bus into the caves area and enjoy a full day tour to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Buddhist caves of Ajanta to view mural depicting scenes of princes and musicians. Located northeast of Aurangabad, the caves date from around 200BC to 650AD and are  cut into the side of a cliff that is on the south side of a U-shaped gorge on the small river Waghur. They are Buddhist monastic buildings representing a number of distinct “monasteries” or colleges during the time of their construction.   Overnight Aurangabad
Day 12

26 January 2018

After an early breakfast, checkout of the hotel  for your visit to the caves of Ellora. The caves consist of 34 rock-cut shrines representing Buddhist, Hindu and Jain art and date back to the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE The caves include paintings and sculptures are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, with figures of the Buddha and depictions of the Jataka tales.   Take a late afternoon flight back to Mumbai. Overnight Mumbai.
Day 13

27 January 2018

This morning we venture to the north of Mumbai to visit the 2,400-year-old Kanheri caves sculpted out of the rocky cliffs which lie within the park.

The Kanheri Caves in the centre of the park were an important Buddhist learning centre and pilgrimage site sculpted by Buddhist monks between the 9th and the 1st centuries BCE.

Prepare for your onward journey or stay on and visit some of the sites around Mumbai such as Victoria Terminus, High Court , Mumbai City Museum and the Gateway to India and one of the many ancient bazaars or to see sunset while strolling along Marine Drive.
